  1. Research and Plan Ahead- cater to your own needs, how much do you really need to know?

Before you pack your bags and head out the door, you may want to take the time to research your destination. We learnt the hard way that sometimes it's less fun to take time out of the present moment whilst you're already travelling to try and plan everything you want to do. This is especially true when you've just started your trip, and you aren't already in the 'let's just see what happens flow'. It's also a particularly true if you are in a HUGE place that has many things to do but only a SHORT amount of time. Feeling in tune with what's on offer and what your priorities and energies are ahead of this will help reduce any overwhelm. It can be a little frustrating when you start searching for plans in your first evening in the city, only to find out that that activity you now desperately want to do was only on that morning, and you missed your chance by not knowing about it sooner. Hey, it happens! Remember - you can't always do it all, and that is a totally normal aspect of life. Trust yourself to guide your plans in the way thats meant for you, even if this looks a little different to everyone else, or what you had planned.

Some things are super exciting learning on the go, such as the local culture, customs, and traditions. Also, it is totally natural to hear about things as you travel by fellow hostel stayers, hotel receptionists, and locals you meet on a great night out. So stay open to learning on the go and being flexible with your plans, to meet the ever changing landscape of possibilities!

You can also familiarise yourself with the public transportation system and map out the must-see attractions, if you are more prone to a little travel anxiety and would rather get the lay of the land (holding in mind our autistic friends, for example). Planning ahead will help you make the most of your trip and ensure a smoother travel experience, especially if you need any disability information, such as wheelchair access, or assistance to help you make it through the hustle and bustle of transportation systems, museums and attractions.

  2. Pack Wisely - be realistic, what do you really need?

When it comes to packing for your trip, less is more. Make a checklist of essential items such as clothing, toiletries, travel documents, and gadgets. Opt for versatile pieces that you can mix and match to create different outfits. Get creative here. Don't forget to pack some comfortable shoes for all the exploring you'll be doing!

  3. Stay Safe Safety should always be a top priority when traveling. Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. Avoid walking alone at night and be cautious of your belongings in crowded areas. It's also a good idea to keep a copy of your passport and important documents in a separate location in case of emergencies.

  4. Connect with Other Travellers

Traveling solo can be a rewarding experience, but it's also nice to connect with other like-minded individuals along the way. Join travel groups or online forums to meet fellow travelers who share your interests. You never know, you might make some lifelong friends and create unforgettable memories together.

  5. Embrace the Unknown One of the most exciting aspects of traveling is stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing the unknown. Be open to trying new foods, exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations, and immersing yourself in different cultures. You never know what incredible experiences await you when you venture beyond your comfort zone.

Remember, travel is not just about the destination, but the journey itself. So, pack your bags, follow these tips, and get ready to empower your wanderlust! Safe travels, fellow adventurers!
